Classic Vegas. This couple is simply remarkable on stage together. I’ve had the opportunity to hear Steve and Eydie live several times now both in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. When you add their charisma to their Nelson Riddle arrangements you’d think the combination would be magic. It probably was 20 years ago. Without doubt, Steve Lawrence still has a great voice. Where the problem comes in is that the arrangements aren’t voiced properly for Edyie’s more mature voice. Sadly, the evening becomes almost painful as Ms. Gorme struggles through the older material, the songs everyone has come to hear. Then, like a shining beacon of hope, they move on to current material, written specifically for them today and like the clouds breaking on a thunder storm, Edyie once again becomes the lyric song bird you expect. My recommendation is they either ditch the old Nelson Riddle arrangements, as brilliant as they are, or they have that brilliance reworked in keys that allow Ms. Gorme to showcase her wonderful talent. |
